AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguar Volleyball program hosted its first tournament under their new name Saturday afternoon, falling to Montevallo 3-0 and beating Pfeiffer 3-1 in the GRU Augusta Tri-Match in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Missed sets and serving errors plagued the Jags in set one verse UM, resulting in a 10-6 deficit into the first GRU (1-6, 0-2 PBC) timeout. UM posted a .379 hitting percentage in set one to GRU's .133. Falcons senior Manyi Ati struck the final kill of set one to win 25-12.
GRU sophomore Katie Beresford tied set two at 2-2, but Ati regained the lead for UM on a kill. After the Falcons broke away midway through the set, GRU tallied four points in a row for a 21-17 disadvantage. The Falcons brought home two-consecutive kills for the 25-20 final.
A 6-0 Falcons run started the set, but after exchanging points, GRU's Paige Tuttle and Beresford combined for a block to even things at 14-all and eventually a 20-all mark.UM outhit the Jags .276 to .135 in the match and had 111 total attacks to GRU's 98.
Beresford, Tuttle, Koch, and Baptiste all had six kills for the Jags and Keeler provided four. Mass led the Jags with 16 assists and had two service aces. Libero Maggie Darling paced GRU with 18 digs and freshman McKenna Heath notched nine assists and two digs. Ati led Montevallo with 13 kills on 27 attacks and Marquez paced the Falcons in assists with 29. Harvey had 16 digs to lead UM and Ati had 14.
Montevallo beat Pfeiffer 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-15) in the 3:00 p.m. match.
The Jags faced Pfeiffer (0-6) for the final match of the night, dropping the first set 25-19 despite Pfeiffer's eight kills and nine errors. Set two saw the Jags take their biggest lead of the day – jumping to a 14-8 mark on Pfeiffer. The Jags held on to win their first set of the day after Beresford and Koch split a block to even the sets 1-1.
GRU maintained the lead after a 4-all tie at the beginning of set three. UM made it 20-17, but the Jags scored the next five points to win set three 25-18 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Jags scored first off a Koch kill in set three and held the lead until UM tied it at 20-all and scored the next two for a 22-20 lead. UM tied it at 25-25, but a Koch kill and a Jags block sealed the match and gave GRU their first victory of the year.
Koch led the kill column with 21 and Baptiste knocked 15 and Tuttle 12. Darling dug 26 balls in the second match and Heath paced the Jags with 44 assists. Beresford had a team-leading five blocks and Keeler was second with four.
GRU Augusta sees its first PBC road test Wednesday, Sept. 18 at Armstrong Atlantic in the Aquatics Recreation Center (ARC) in Savannah, Ga., at 7:00 p.m.
