Jags Suffer Narrow Loss to Catawba in Season Opener

Augusta, GA. – The Augusta University softball team fell to the Catawba Indians in both games by a mere one-run margin. The Jags lost 5-6 in the first game of the double header and 8-9 in the second game of the series.

The matchup between Augusta (0-2) and Catawba (2-0) marks the season opener for both teams after last season was cut short due to COVID-19.

Next up, the Jaguars travel to Emmanuel (Ga) for a 1:00pm doubleheader on Sat. Feb 6th. Augusta was initially slated to play Wingate Sunday Jan. 31st, but the contest will be rescheduled due to inclement weather.

Both teams left 8 runners on base in the virtually even contest. Catawba carded 10 hits to Augusta's 9. The Indians took a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Catawba hit a 2 RBI-double to score the first two runs before an AU error allowed a third run. After a two run homer at the top of the 5th inning, the Indians remained scoreless through the end of the game. Megan McCook scored on a wild pitch to bring the score within one, but the Jaguars fell 5-6.

Olivia Biles went 2-for-4 and Jakayla Sullivan was 2-for-2 with 2 runs for AU. Summer Frye added 2 RBI in the contest.

On the mound, Augusta sophomore Kelsey Parks started and struck out 2 batters in 2.1 innings of work. Mary Tillman registered the final 4.2 innings on the mound, striking out 3 batters and allowing 1 run.

The second contest of the day was a lopsided scoring event. Augusta registered 7 runs in the 4th inning alone, while Catawba registered 3 in the 2nd inning and 5 in the 7th.  Augusta registered 9 hits and Catawba registered 10. After leading 8-3 in the bottom of the 4th, the Indians scored 5 runs to force extra innings. Catawba notched a 9-8 win over the home team.

Chloe Wilson registered 7 innings in her first game of the season with 4 strikeouts. Kelsey Parks (0-2) pitched the final inning.
