AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University softball team hosted the Virginia State Trojans on Wednesday afternoon at Jaguar Field and won 27-1 and 4-0 in non-conference play.
Augusta (5-27) totaled 25 hits and 31runs against Virginia State (14-15) in the non-conference wins. The Jaguars host USC Aiken on Saturday, April 6 for an 11:00 a.m. Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.
The Jaguars recovered from a 1-0 deficit in the first inning and scored nine in their first at bat. An inside-the-park home run down the right-field line from junior Meredith McLendon highlighted AU's big first inning as they batted around. Augusta went on to beat the Trojans 27-1.
The Jags broke a Peach Belt Conference singe-inning record for all games and set a new school record when they recorded 12 hits in the bottom of the second. AU's 22 total hits were two shy of a school record.
Augusta junior Morgan Hunter (3-13) started her 16th game of the year and pitched her 10th complete game. Hunter struck out nine and allowed three hits for one run.
AU freshman Lauren Prescott went 5-for-5 with four runs and two RBI and AU senior Savannah Gabriel went 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBI. Senior Kelsea Hunter was 3-for-3 with four RBI for the Jags and sophomore Bella Fernandez was 3-for-4 with three runs. Jags junior Meredith McLendon carded three RBI and scored twice with a 2-for-5 performance, while senior Lydia Hausman and sophomore Regan Norfleet each posted two RBI and had two hits.
The Jaguars shut out the Trojans 4-0 in the second meeting and had four hits to VSU's one.
Hausman was 1-for-1 with two RBI and a scored run, while Gabriel went 1-for-4 with an RBI for Augusta.
