Jags Sweep Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. -- Senior shortstop Kacee Camp provided the heroics Wednesday afternoon as Augusta State registered a sweep of its non-conference doubleheader with Wingate at the WU Softball Complex.

A four-year starter from nearby Harlem, Ga., Camp singled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and Emily Headrick nailed down the save for a 3-2 victory. In the opener, senior Jessica Thornton drilled a 3-run homer and Headrick tossed a two-hitter in an 8-0 win.

With the victories, the Jaguars established a new school record for consecutive wins with 15 while improving to 21-5 on the season. The previous mark of 14 straight was set during the 2010 season.

"I'm really proud of what this team has accomplished so far but we have a lot of season left," head coach Melissa Mullins said. "The Peach Belt Conference competition is no joke and we know we still have a lot of tough opponents left to play. We plan to keep on working hard and not get too comfortable or confident."

In the first game, freshman Molly Walton and Thornton each went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. Camp was 2-for-4 and freshman Brooke Stephens jacked her first collegiate home run. Thornton broke a scoreless tie with her 3-run dinger in the fourth inning and the Jags tacked on a run in the fifth and two each in the sixth and seventh.

Headrick (9-2) allowed only two singles and struck out five with just one walk.

In game two, senior Kristen Jones and freshman Hannah Vaughn had two hits each and junior Lauren Yeargan slapped a 2-run shot to put ASU in front 2-0. The Bulldogs rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Heather Hughes worked the first 3.2 innings and yielded five hits with one strikeout and one walk. Freshman Heather Sexton (5-1) went 4.1 innings in relief of Hughes and gave up three hits and two earned runs. Headrick took over in the bottom of the ninth. With a runner on second, she issued a one-out walk before inducing a flyout and punctuating the save with a strikeout to end the game.

The Jags host Columbus State on Friday and Georgia College for Parents' Day on Saturday. Both Peach Belt Conference twinbills are slated for a 1:00 p.m., first pitch at Jaguar Field.
