AUGUSTA, Ga. – Heather Hughes quieted the Georgia Southwestern bats in game two and provided some offense of her own en route to completing a sweep of the Lady Hurricanes and improving Augusta State's winning streak to 13.
The Lady Hurricanes (12-14, 0-4 PBC) got on the board first, getting one across in the top of the second playing small-ball as Janna Anderson's RBI single brought Avery Purser home.
But the Jaguars (19-5, 4-0 PBC) immediately responded with two in the bottom of the inning. Jessica Thornton started things off with a single, and moved to second on Hannah Vaughn's sacrifice bunt. Lauren Yeargan doubled to deep right center to bring Thornton home, and then scored by swiping third on a double-steal and moving home on an error.
Hughes (7-1) hurled a complete game, giving up just one run and five hits. She struck out two and walked one, inducing plenty of ground balls and relying on a solid team defensive effort.
Jessica Martin took the loss for the Lady 'Canes, falling to 5-4 on the year after allowing four runs (two earned) in a complete-game effort.
In the first game, Georgia Southwestern took a 4-2 lead in the third, getting two bases-loaded walks in the process of piling on three runs.
But the Jaguars answered, getting two in the fifth and three in the sixth, highlighted by Renae Kimbell's two runs scored and two-RBI single to seal the win.
Emily Headrick held on for the win to improve to 7-2, giving up four runs in seven innings. She struck out four, issuing three walks in the process.
Kate Maddox (3-4) took the loss in relief for the Lady Hurricanes.
Jessica Thornton led the Jags offensively, going a combined 3-for-5 with three RBI, two walks, and two runs scored. She also stole two bases.
Augusta State next heads to Wingate Wednesday, March 14 for a non-conference doubleheader before hosting Columbus State and Georgia College on Friday and Saturday.
