AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State looks to repeat its recent championship success on Saturday, Oct. 20 at the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala. for the men's 8K and women's 6K Peach Belt Conference Championships.
The Jaguar men's team enters the race as 2011 PBC Cross Country Champions, winning first place at last year's title race while the women took third, respectively. Dustin Ross and Jaiden Brandt both finished in the top-10 for the men and Jessica Carpenter paced the women with a fourth place finish. The men's team enters the weekend ranked fourth in regional rankings.
Montevallo is hosting the Cross Country championships for the first time and its first PBC Championship event in the school's history. The weekend's events will commence on Friday, Oct. 19 at 3:00 p.m. for a course preview, where runners will be able to familiarize themselves with the Falcons course, followed by a coaches meeting at 7:00 p.m.
Race day begins early Saturday morning with a 7:00 a.m.-8:30 a.m. warm-up ending in time for the men's 8K check-in at 8:45 a.m. The men race first at 9:00 a.m. and the women follow in their 6K at 9:45 a.m. The championships will conclude with an awards presentation near the finish line at 11:00 a.m.
The men's 8K consists of host Montevallo, Armstrong Atlantic, Augusta State, Clayton State, Columbus State, Flagler, Francis Marion, Georgia College, UNC Pembroke and Young Harris, who will be competing in their first PBC Championships of any kind since joining the conference this fall.
The women's 6K will see Montevallo, Augusta State, Clayton State, Columbus State, Flagler, Francis Marion, Georgia college, Georgia Southwestern, UNC Pembroke, North Georgia, USC Aiken and Young Harris.
The Jags hope to continue their regular season success at Montevallo's home course. The men took first place and the women fifth this year on Sept. 22 at the Falcon Classic. Dustin Ross earned the individual title for the men and Jessica Carpenter paced the Jags with a 15th place finish.
