AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta University head men's basketball coach of 15 years, Dip Metress, has announced the 2018-19 men's basketball schedule. The new agenda is made up of 28 contests in total and includes 13 home games in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Augusta kicks off the 2018-19 season with a high-profile exhibition game on Friday, Oct. 26 against the South Carolina Gamecocks at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C. The event is free to all and the time is TBA.
The Jaguars begin official play in Wilson, N.C. for back-to-back games against Mount Olive (Nov. 9) and Barton College (Nov. 10). This is the third straight season that Augusta has competed in the non-conference tournament on the campus of Barton.
The following week, the Jags play a few minutes away from home and take on Paine College in The HEAL Complex on Nov. 17 in Augusta. AU hosts its first game of the season in Christenberry Fieldhouse against Benedict on Nov. 21 and travels to Bowie, Md. to play at Bowie State Nov. 25 for the annual meeting with the Bowie Bulldogs.
December kicks off with the first Peach Belt Conference game of the season against Georgia College (Dec. 1) at home in the Berry. Augusta has set its fifth edition of the Education Day game for Dec. 6 against Emmanuel College in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jags will welcome over 2,000 fifth graders from the Richmond County School System to watch the men's team in a special 11:00 a.m. single game.
The Jags ring in the New Year with two PBC games against Clayton State (Jan. 5) and Flagler (Jan. 9). AU heads to Columbus, Ga. on Jan. 12 where it will be a battle of the felines with the Jaguars taking on the Cougars of Columbus State. The team returns home to host three straight games in Christenberry: UNC Pembroke (Jan. 16), North Georgia (Jan. 19), and Young Harris (Jan. 21) before hitting the road to play Francis Marion (Jan. 23) and Georgia Southwestern (Jan. 26). January will end with a home game against USC Aiken (Jan. 30).
February starts off with a game at Christenberry, when the Jags face Lander (Feb. 2) and then travel to St. Augustine, Fla. to battle Flagler (Feb. 6), before Columbus State visits Augusta (Feb. 9). After three conference road games, the Jaguars welcome Francis Marion (Feb. 20) and Georgia Southwestern (Feb. 23). The regular-season ends with trips to USC Aiken (Feb. 27) and Lander (March 2).
The Peach Belt Conference Tournament will take place in early March. The PBC Tournament quarterfinal games will be held March 6 followed by the PBC semifinals and finals March 9-10.
About Augusta Men's Basketball
The Augusta University men's basketball team is led by head coach Dip Metress. On May 10, 2004, Metress was introduced as the fifth head coach in program history. He previously led the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (1996-04) and was an assistant for the Jaguars under Clint Bryant (1989-95). He has never had a losing season in his 14 seasons at the helm of the Jaguars. A two-time Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Metress and the Jags hosted five straight NCAA Regional Tournaments from 2007-11 and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight three seasons in a row. He was named the South Atlantic Coach of the Year in 2007, the Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2009, and the NABC Southeast District Coach of the Year in 2011.
Augusta men's hoops has retired four numbers in its 52-year history: Ben Madgen (1), Keshun Sherrill (10), Tyrekus 'AJ' Bowman (23), and Keenan Mann (32). The Jaguars have reached the NCAA tournament 11 times and won their region three times.
