AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team hosted its first Peach Belt Conference game of the 2017-18 season in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon. The Jaguars met Young Harris College and won 78-69 with senior Tamyrik Fields scoring a career-best 26 points.
Next up, Augusta (5-3, 2-0 PBC) hosts North Georgia on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 11:00 a.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse for the annual Education Day game with over 2,000 fifth graders from the Richmond County School System.
Augusta posted a 46.7 field-goal percentage (28-of-60) to YHC's 53.1 mark, while AU shot 10 percent the three-point line and 72.4 at the free-throw line (21-of-29). The Jaguars trailed for the entire first half, but just over 53 percent in the second to grab the victory.
Fields scored his career-high 26 points with seven rebounds and junior Deane Williams scored 17 with seven boards. Junior Tyvez Monroe notched 11 points with nine boards, and freshman Mikkel Kolstad put up 12 off the bench for Augusta.
YHC (2-7, 1-2 PBC) jumped to an 11-2 run to open the contest and were up by as much as 14 in the first half. The Jags won the opening tipoff, but never led in the first 20 minutes of action and trailed 38-30 at halftime.
Fields had 12 points and three rebounds for AU in the first half, but eight Jaguar turnovers allowed YHC a 13-point lead midway through the first. Augusta tied the game at 44-all with 14 minutes to go in regulation and grabbed its first lead at 54-53 with just over 11 minutes on the clock, when Kyle Doyle found Kolstad on a fast-break bucket.
The Jags led by three with 3:30 to go and Kolstad's drive to the rim for a layup put the Jags up by five. Two big Augusta dunks down the stretch provided the momentum and the lead to give AU the 78-69. There were nine lead changes in the final 11 minutes of action, but the Jags prevailed to get to 2-0 in the conference.
