AUGUSTA, Ga. - Augusta All-American junior Keshun Sherrill hit a free throw to push him past 1,000 career points as the Jaguars won a 76-59 non-conference game on Saturday night over the visiting Shaw Bears.
Augusta won their second game in a row and moved to 2-1 with the win, while Shaw slid to 1-4 on the year. With 3:26 to go in the game, Sherrill hit two free throws to push him past 1,000 career points for his young career. Sherrill needed 18 points and finished the night with 25 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Freshman Deane Williams had 11 points and five rebounds and senior Tommy Williams posted 10 points, six boards, and a block. Freshman Tyvez Monroe had eight points and five rebounds and junior Keith Crump contributed six points, four rebounds, and four steals.
The Bears went on a 5-0 run to open the afternoon and held an 11-5 advantage after the first five minutes on the court. Freshman Ben Ursich connected his first shot attempt with a three pointer, but Shaw stayed ahead with Joell Hopkins Jr., attacking the rim. Hopkins had 17 to lead Shaw on the night.
Sherrill kissed a layup off the glass and freshman Ja'Shawn Brooks sunk a trey with a hand in his face to bring the score to 21-20 with 3:45 to go in the first half. Senior Tommy Williams' pair at the free-throw line put the Jags up 24-21 for the first lead of the day. Sherrill and Crump each had a steal in the next two Shaw possessions that resulted in four points to boost the Jags ahead.
At the half, the Jags were ahead 32-24 despite shooting 38.7 percent from the floor. Out of the halftime whistle, Williams had a put-back basket and Sherril nailed a three pointer to move Augusta up by eight.
The Jags outscored the Bears 44-35 in the second half and posted a 44.4 percent field-goal percentage to Shaw' s 42.6 percent. Augusta outlasted Shaw in the closing three minutes with help from the Shaw bench who got two technical fouls and coaching ejection.
The rebound battle went to Augusta 38-27 and they got to the free-throw line to hit 23 of 29 shots.
Augusta returns to the Christenberry Fieldhouse tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 28 to host the Mount Olive Trojans at 4:00 p.m.
