NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Augusta University baseball team traveled to No. 22 nationally-ranked Newberry College on Tuesday night and dropped a close 10-9 non-conference game.

AU (14-16) first met Newberry (28-7) on March 12 at home in another back-and-forth battle that they pulled out 6-5. In the second meeting, the teams combined for 13 runs in the three first innings and the score changed six times in the contest, but the Wolves survived to get their ninth straight win.

Augusta freshman Ben Markiewicz went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, sophomore Skylor Murphy was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the leadoff spot, and senior Zack Goble carded two RBI on one. Senior Harrison Moore had a 2-for-5 day, as the Jags outhit the Wolves 12-to-8, but committed seven errors.

Newberry scored first in the opening inning, but Augusta put up a five spot in the second. Sophomores Carrington Evans, Murphy, Markiewicz, and Moore all hit singles in the inning to pick up an RBI. Sophomore Trent Maddox also had an RBI in the big at bat for the Jags.

The Wolves withstood and plated six in the second and one in the third to lead 8-5 heading into the fourth. AU kept it going in the fourth when Goble drove in two more with a double to get the squad into a one-run battle.

Down 8-7, Augusta tied the game when Evans stole second and caused a balk with freshman Beau Hanna on third base that allowed him to score. Newberry tacked on two more to go up 10-8 and held on for the win.

AU freshman Tripp Church made the start and gave up an early lead, as the Jags went to freshman Alex Colon and senior Chase Slone in the bullpen. Slone struck out four in four innings of relief work to keep the Wolves scoreless on one hit. Freshman Chase Horton (0-3) took over and surrendered two runs in two innings of work.
