AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team scored from second on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning to seal a 9-8 walk-off win over Saint Rose in non-conference action at Jaguar Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The game moved the Jaguars to 10-10, while Saint Rose, out of Albany, N.Y., is now 1-4 on the season. Augusta built a 2-0 lead after the second inning, but Saint Rose cut the score in half with a lone run in the fifth inning. A single up the middle in the sixth inning drove in two more Golden Knights and Saint Rose totaled five runs in the sixth to steal a 6-2 lead.
Eventually down 8-5 heading into the eighth inning, Augusta made it a two-run game with a run in the eighth. In their final scheduled at bat, the Jags got the first three batters on when senior Devin Bilardello reached on an error, sophomore Trent Maddox singled, and senior Harrison Moore laid down a bunt to load the bases. A single down the right-field line from senior Patrick Watson tied the game at 8-8 and forced extra innings.
Freshman Ben Markiewicz scored from second base on a wild pitch to give AU the 9-8 win. Augusta freshman Beau Hanna was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run and sophomore Mason Robertson and Watson each delivered two hits for the Jags.
Augusta freshman Tripp Church pitched five innings and struck out seven, while holding the Golden Knights to two hits for one run. AU freshman Clark Adams made a brief appearance in the sixth inning, before junior transfer Ryan Cotton, freshman Alex Colon, and seniors Chase Slone and Aron Chick pitched. Chick (1-0) got the win on the mound.
The Jaguars are back to Peach Belt Conference competition this weekend with a trip to Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga., March 8-10.
