Augusta Finishes Season In Sixth At NCAA Southeast Regional

WINGATE, N.C. – The Augusta University women's cross country team took sixth out of 23 teams on Saturday morning at the NCAA Southeast Regional to cap off an outstanding season. Augusta was top 10 all season long and finished first or second in five of six races.

 

 

The top three teams from each regional meet automatically advanced to the championship finals for a total of 24 teams. The top two individuals not on a qualifying team also advanced for a total of 16.

 

Hosted by the Wingate Bulldogs at the Wingate XC Facility, the 2017 regional featured a women's 6K at 9:00 a.m. and a men's 10K at 10:15 a.m. Queens won the women's race, while Anderson took second, and Mount Olive third to move on to the finals.

 

"I am very proud of our women's team. They ran a near perfect race and it's all I could ask for," Augusta head coach Adam Ward said. So proud of them and our seniors for their dedication over the years."

 

The race was the final competition for Augusta seniors Amber Palermo, Diana Petrmichlova, Olivia Rodriguez, and Lara Way. Way led the team and took 11th in 22:58.80, while Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, Micah Weathers, placed 20th in 23:18.19, and junior McKenzie Knudsen 25th in 23:31.22. Way, Weathers, and McKenzie Knudsen earned All-Region honors for finishing in the top 25.

 

Petrmichlova crossed the line in 39th (24:16.44), freshman Miranda Taylor 42nd (24:20.97), Rodriguez 79th (25:17.93), and Palermo 85th (25:27.00).

 

Augusta entered the race No. 6 in the NCAA Southeast Region rankings, after finishing first or second in all five meets prior to the regional.
