FORT BENNING, Ga. – The Augusta University women's cross country team raced the 2017 Peach Belt Conference Championships on Saturday and finished in second place at Fort Gordon Army Base on Stewart-Watson Field. Augusta senior Lara Way finished third overall and ran the fastest 5K in school history, AU rookie Micah Weathers was named the PBC Freshman of the Year, and a total of three Jags were named All-PBC.
North Georgia won the race 10 points ahead of AU, while Georgia College took third, Flagler fourth, UNC Pembroke fifth, Columbus State sixth, Clayton State seventh, Francis Marion eighth, Georgia Southwestern ninth, USC Aiken 10th, and Lander 11th. GC standout Katherine Yost won the title of PBC Champion, after finishing first in 17:18.8. The top-15 racers were named Peach Belt All-Conference and the top finishing freshman was named the PBC Freshman of the Year.
Augusta has either been first or second in all five races this season. This is the fourth time the Jags have finished runner up at the PBC Championships. Lara Way legged out the 5K race in 17:53.4 to take third out of 85 racers.
Micah Weathers placed sixth overall for Augusta in a time of 18:10.4 to take the top rookie honor. McKenzie Knudsen crossed the line in 18:25.1 to take ninth place, freshman Miranda Taylor finished in 18:55.1 for 17th, senior Diana Petrmichlova notched 19th in 18:56.0, and senior Amber Palermo placed 35th in 19:28.7.
AU senior Olivia Rodriguez raced in 19:39.7 for 40th, sophomore Sinead O'Bryant earned 51st in 20:04.4, and second-year Jaguar Rachel Hammesfahr took 61st in 20:56.7.
The NCAA Southeast Regionals take place on Saturday, Nov. 4 in Wingate., N.C., hosted by the Wingate Bulldogs. AU ran at Wingate once this year and finished second out of 19 teams.
