Augusta Falls To Georgia College 3-1 In First Round Of The NCAA Tournament

WINGATE, N.C. – Making its second appearance ever in the NCAA Tournament, the Augusta University volleyball team met Georgia College in first round of the NCAA Southeast Regional on Thursday afternoon and fell 3-1 after winning the first set in the Cuddy Arena.

 

 

Augusta (24-8) 1, Georgia College 3 (17-12) 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, and 19-25

 

No. 3 seed Augusta and No. 6 seed Georgia College met for the fourth time this season and the second time in five days. GC owned the regular-season meetings, but Augusta avenged the losses by winning the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship over the Bobcats.

 

In set one, AU recorded its sixth assisted block to take a 14-8 lead, as GC called the first timeout of the day. The score was tied at 4-4, but Augusta took the lead from there and never let it go. The Jaguars held the Bobcats to a .061 hitting percentage in set one and went on to win 25-20.

 

The Jags won the first point of the second set, but the Bobcats booked a 25-20 win to even the match. Down by seven points midway through the third set, Augusta rallied to get within one at 18-17 and tied the set at 22-all. GC took over the final points to win the third 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead. A fourth-set win at 25-19 advanced the Bobcats and closed the season for the Jaguars.

 

First team All-Conference selection McKenzey Beck posted her ninth triple-double of the season with 14 kills, 13 assists, and 12 digs for Augusta. She finishes her two-year career at AU with 21 triple doubles.

 

Senior Savanna Gonzales gave AU nine kills, junior Jessica Hedrick and sophomore Chloe Allen each added eight kills, and senior Blair Bolton carded seven kills. Allen recorded 14 digs as well and six assisted blocks. Senior Nathalia Gouveia put up 13 digs, sophomore libero Holland Martin 22 digs, and junior setter Cheryke Brian-Garmos 33 assists and 14 digs.

 

Augusta had a .130 attack percentage to GC's .156 and had 13 blocks to GC's six.

 

Georgia College will play the winner of USC Aiken and Lincoln Memorial in the second round on Friday, Nov. 16 at 5:00 p.m. in the Cuddy Arena.

 

The No.1 seed Wingate Bulldogs are hosts to the tournament inside Cuddy Arena in Wingate, N.C. for the seventh time in 11 years. The opening round features Augusta, Anderson, Emmanuel, Georgia College, Lander, Lincoln Memorial, USC Aiken, and Wingate.
