Augusta Shuts Out USC Aiken In Conference Rivalry

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University volleyball team swept the USC Aiken Pacers 3-0 in Peach Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

 

Augusta (15-4, 4-2 PBC) met its rival from across the Savannah River for the first of two conference meetings and took care of USC Aiken (14-3, 4-1 PBC) in straight sets. It was AU's first win over USCA since 2015 and the first sweep over the Pacers since Oct. 17, 2012.

 

Augusta started strong with a 6-1 run in set one that forced a USCA timeout. The Jags ran away and won 25-14. Set two was a closer battle, but Augusta pulled out a 26-24 victory to take a 2-0 lead in the match, before winning 32-30 in a classic third set.

 

AU senior Savanna Gonzales posted 11 kills for her ninth match with double-figure kills and she added 10 digs. Junior Jessica Hedrick, who ranks second in the league in blocks, added five block assists with 10 kills and five digs for Augusta. Jags Junior Cheryke Brian-Garmos carded 26 assists and eight digs and sophomore Holland Martin picked up 21 digs and a pair of assists.

 

Augusta had a .245 hitting percentage to USCA's .110 and posted nine blocks to the Pacers' three.

 

The Jags play at Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C. on Tuesday, Oct. 9 for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference contest.
