Augusta Volleyball to Recognize Wounded Warrior Project Veterans Oct. 6

AUGUSTA, Ga. (October 3, 2018) – Many wounded warriors struggle with the transition back into civilian life after combat, and inclusion in collegiate sporting events is more than just a way for veterans to feel appreciated and honored for their sacrifices. It provides opportunities to be reintroduced to the unique bonds experienced during military service. Rarely duplicated in the civilian world, these relationships act as a secure bedrock that paves the road to recovery. The Augusta University volleyball team is rallying behind our nation's heroes during their Peach Belt Conference match on Saturday, Oct. 6 against USC Aiken in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguars first serve is at 2:00 p.m.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host a match that will honor our veterans," AU volleyball head coach Sharon Quarles said. "It is so important to take a moment to extend a sincere thank you for their service. These veterans are the ones that stand in the gaps to keep us safe on a daily basis. We honor you and thank you for all that you do and have done and look forward to hosting the event."

In collaboration with Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP), Augusta Volleyball has invited local warriors served by WWP to come watch and support the Jaguars as they take on their rival from across the Savannah River in the first of two conference showdowns this season.

More than 48,000 service members have been physically wounded during the military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. An estimated 400,000 more are living with the invisible wounds of war, including post-traumatic stress disorder, major depression, and traumatic brain injury.

That's why WWP connects warriors with one another, their families, and communities, and with life-changing programs and services. It serves warriors with programs targeting mental and physical health, career and benefits counseling, and support for the most severely wounded. And WWP empowers warriors to mentor other veterans and live life on their terms.
