Gonzales Gets 1,000 Career Kills In 3-0 Win Over Catawba

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University volleyball team hosted the Catawba Indians on Friday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse for its first match of the Augusta / USC Aiken Invitational – a non-conference tournament co-hosted by the Jaguars and USCA. Augusta senior outside hitter Savanna Gonzales reached a milestone in her four-year career with 1,000 kills as the Jaguars swept Catawba in straight sets to remain undefeated on the season.

 

 

Co-hosted by AU and USCA at Christenberry Fieldhouse and the Convocation Center. The tournament features Augusta, Barton, Carson-Newman, Catawba, Lander, Queens, USC Aiken, and West-Alabama.

 

Augusta (8-1) took the first set 25-16 and the second 25-18. After streaking to a 6-0 lead in the third, AU went on to win 25-17 to get their sixth shutout victory of the season. Gonzales entered the match only needing one kill to reach the mark and blasted one on the left side to put the Jags up early in set one.

 

Gonzales led the team with 10 kills and 12 digs and senior setter McKenzey Beck carded 16 assists, eight digs, and eight kills.

 

Jags junior Jessica Hedrick posted a .800 attack percentage with nine kills to one error, sophomore libero Holland Martin had 13 digs, and junior Cheryke Brian-Garmos recorded 17 assists, 14 digs, and a pair of aces for AU.

 

The Jaguars return to the floor on Saturday, Sept. 8 to take on Carson-Newman (2:30 p.m.) and West-Alabama (5:00 p.m.).
