Augusta Splits To Wrap Home Tournament

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University volleyball team welcomed Carson-Newman and West Alabama on Saturday, Sept. 8 to finish up the Augusta / USC Aiken Invitational in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Jaguars fell to Carson-Newman 3-1 and beat West Alabama 3-2 in non-conference play.

 

 

Co-hosted by AU and USCA at Christenberry Fieldhouse and the Convocation Center. The tournament features Augusta, Barton, Carson-Newman, Catawba, Lander, Queens, USC Aiken, and West-Alabama.

 

AU heads to North Greenville in Tigerville, Ga., on Saturday, Sept. 15 to take on Southern Wesleyan and North Greenville in a non-conference dual match.

 

Augusta vs. Carson-Newman

The Jags (9-2) dropped the first two sets 25-19 and 25-23 to the Eagles. In a must win third set, Augusta fell 25-20 to lose for the first time at home this season. Four players had six or more kills for the Jaguars, with senior McKenzey Beck leading the team with eight kills, 17 assists, and nine digs. Senior Savanna Gonzales added 13 digs with seven kills, and sophomore Chloe Allen chipped in four blocks, six kills, three digs, and an ace.

 

Augusta vs. West-Alabama

After dropping the first two sets 25-21 and 25-19, Augusta won the third with ease at 25-15. Facing elimination, the Jags won the fourth and fifth to comeback for the 3-2 win.

 

Sophomore Alyssa Frazier led AU with 12 kills and she added three blocks and two digs. Gonzales had another double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs, Beck had 15 assists and digs and eight kills, and Cheryke Brian-Garmos put up 25 assists with seven digs.
