AU Goes 2-0 To Start Season At Jaguar Rumble

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Sporting a new roster, new uniforms, and a brand new schedule, the Augusta University volleyball team began the 2018 season on Saturday by hosting the Jaguar Rumble in Christenberry Fieldhouse. Augusta swept Albany State and Mount Olive 3-0 in a pair of non-conference contests to start the year.

 

 

The non-conference tournament features host Augusta, Albany State, Lander, Montevallo, and Mount Olive.  Augusta hosted its season opener against Albany State to start the tournament. After Montevallo faced Mount Olive and Albany State vs. Montevallo, the Jaguars returned to the floor to battle Mount Olive at 7:30 p.m.

 

Sunday's action sees Mount Olive take on Lander at 12:00 p.m., before the Jags host Montevallo to wrap the event at 2:30 p.m.

 

AUGUSTA vs. ALBANY STATE

 In the 2018 season opener, the Jaguars (2-0) ran away from the Albany State Rams in the first set after opening with a strong rally. Albany State called two timeouts before reaching 15 points to try and slow down Augusta, but the home team stormed to a 25-18 win. Augusta held ASU to two negative hitting percentages in the match and won set two 25-16. AU led 14-2 at one point in the final set and dominated with a 25-7 finish – their second largest win of the day.

 

Preseason Peach Belt All-Conference selection McKenzey Beck nearly had a triple-double with 13 assists, nine digs, and six kills for Augusta. Senior Savanna Gonzales posted nine kills and four digs, while senior Natalia Gouveia notched four aces and six digs for the Jaguars.

 

AU posted a .321 hitting percentage and held Albany State to a -.049 mark. The Jags had six blocks to ASU's zero.

 

AUGUSTA vs. MOUNT OLIVE

Augusta met Mount Olive to conclude Saturday's play and owned the match. AU won 25-13, 25-3, and 25-19 to sweep the day with ease. The Jags posted 40 kills to UMO's 16 and blocked eight more shots than the Trojans.

 

Beck booked 11 kills and 11 assists for Augusta. Junior Cheryke Brian-Garmos recorded 15 assists, five digs, and three kills, Gonzales gave AU eight kills, four aces, and five digs, while junior Jessica Hedrick had six kills, four blocks, and a pair of digs.
