Jags Finish PBC/SAC Crossover With Five Set Battle

AIKEN, S.C. – The Augusta University women's volleyball team competed in day two of the PBC/SAC Crossover, hosted by USC Aiken in the Convocation Center, and dropped a pair of matches to Lincoln-Memorial and Carson-Newman.

 

The non-conference, two-day event featured teams from the Peach Belt Conference and South Atlantic Conference. In day one on Friday the 13th, Augusta (11-10) fell 3-0 to Tusculum and beat Mars Hill 3-1 to snap a four-match losing streak.

 

Augusta met the Lincoln-Memorial Railsplitters and the Carson-Newman Eagles to conclude the event on Saturday afternoon. LMU beat the Jaguars 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 15-25, 25-17), while Augusta fell 3-2 to C-N (25-23, 19-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-13).

 

The Jaguars head to Newberry for a non-conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 17 in Newberry, S.C., at 6:00 p.m.

 

Augusta vs. Lincoln-Memorial (Oct. 14)

The Jaguars met LMU for their third match of the event. The Railsplitters roped in a 25-20 set one win over Augusta, behind a .234 hitting percentage to AU's .083. Set two was a closer affair that saw seven lead changes, but LMU lifted a 25-21 victory to force Augusta into a must win third set. The Jags reversed the momentum in the third set with a .400 attack percentage to take a 25-15 win – the largest of the match.

 

Down 5-1 in set four, Augusta won the next five points to steal the lead 6-5. A back-and-forth contest until the final points, the set went to LMU 25-17 to end the match 3-1. LMU outhit Augusta .213 to .164 in the match and had three more blocks.

 

Augusta junior McKenzey Beck booked her ninth triple-double of the season with 10 kills, 18 assists, and 12 digs. Freshman Alyssa Frazier gave AU eight kills, three digs, and two blocks, while junior Blair Bolton finished with seven kills and two blocks.

 

Augusta vs. Carson-Newman (Oct. 14)

The opening set was tied five times, but the lead never went to Augusta. Gonzales' kill made it 21-all, but the Eagles earned the crucial points to win a close 25-23 set-one battle. Augusta and C-N were tied nine times in the second set, until a kill from Beck and an attack error from the Eagles put AU on set point. Jags rookie Rachel Hill came in to serve and Augusta earned the final point for 25-22 win.

 

The fourth set was the closest of the night and went to the Eagle, 26-24. In the final and fifth set Augusta grabbed the opening point, but found themselves behind 8-6 at the pause. Carson-Newman notched a 14-11 lead for match point, but the Jags never quit and made it 14-13. The Eagle kept composure and won 15-13.

 

Beck had a match high 21 kills and 27 assists, and added 20 for her 10th triple-double. Gonzales gave the Jags 19 kills, and Natalia Gouveia had 11. Holland Martin led Au with 44 digs, while Kenya Stokes and Gouveia each had 23.
