AIKEN, S.C. – The Jaguars traveled across the Savannah River for a Friday night matchup against the USC Aiken Pacers and dropped a 3-1 Peach Belt Conference match in the Convocation Center.
The match moved Augusta to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in the PBC, while USCA went to 14-2 on the year and 5-0 in the league.
Jags sophomore Jessica Hedrick started off the match strong with a kill as Augusta rolled to a 6-0 lead to force a USCA timeout. The Jaguars stayed in control throughout the set and won with a score of 25-21.
Going into the first timeout of set two Aiken led 12-11. A four-point run for the Pacers was something Augusta could not come back from and they fell 25-17 to even the match.
Set three saw the Jaguars endure one of their longest sets of the season. An Ace by Hedrick pulled Augusta ahead with a score of 21-20. The set was back and forth with both teams showing resilience to take the set into the 30s, but USCA survived 33-31.
The Jags came into the fourth and final set strong with a lead over Aiken at 6-2. The Pacers fought back and overtook the rally. 20-16 Aiken sealed the win with a final score of 25-19.
Savanna Gonzales posted 11 kills during the match for aU. Natalia Gouveia led the team in digs at 21, and Libero Holland Martin not far behind at 17.
Augusta plays a non-conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at Queens University in Charlotte, N.C., at 6:00 p.m.
