Jags Split Opening Day Of PBC/SAC Crossover

AIKEN, S.C. – The Jaguars opened play in the PBC/SAC Crossover on Friday afternoon in the Convocation Center on the campus of USC Aiken and lost a 3-0 match to Tusculum College, before winning 3-1 over Mars Hill University.

 

The non-conference, two-day event features teams across the Peach Belt Conference and South Atlantic Conference. On Friday the 13th, Augusta (11-8) tackled Tusculum in the opening match and met Mars Hill in the second. Tusculum won in straight sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-22) in the first match, before Augusta brought down Mars Hill (25-16, 26-24, 16-2, 25-19).

 

The Jags meet Lincoln Memorial (12:00 p.m.) and Carson-Newman (4:00 p.m.) on Saturday, Oct. 14 to wrap up the PBC/SAC Crossover.

 

Augusta vs. Tusculum (Oct. 13)

The Pioneers put up eight unanswered points to start the match, forcing Augusta to take a timeout down 8-0. Junior McKenzey Beck had the first kill for the Jags as they fought back for a 14-10 deficit. The early troubles were too much to recover from as Augusta slipped 25-13 in set one. Tusculum took a 25-16 win in set two and capped the match with a 25-22 victory in the third. It was AU's first 3-0 loss of the season.

 

Junior Savanna Gonzales led the Jags with 11 kills, while Beck had 10 kills, nine assists, and eight digs. Sophomore setter Payton Murchie posted 16 assists and freshman libero Holland Martin had 17 digs.

 

Augusta vs. Mars Hill (Oct. 13)

Augusta dropped the opening two rallies of the first and second sets, but they came away with wins by the final point. Augusta won 25-16 in the opening set. In the second, the Jags trailed the entire time until Gonzales made it 23-all on an outside kill. Augusta rallied and stole a 26-24 win. Up 2-0 in the match, AU dropped the third 25-16, but recovered for a 25-19 win the sealed the day.

 

Beck and Gonzales each had 13 kills, Hedrick put up 11, and Murchie had 23 assists. Beck also enjoyed 19 assists and 17 digs for eighth triple-double of the 2017 season. Murchie and freshman Alyssa Frazier each had three aces.
