Augusta Falls, 3-1, To Francis Marion In Peach Belt Opener

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's volleyball team hosted Francis Marion on Friday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse to begin Peach Belt Conference play and dropped a 3-1 match.

 

The loss snapped a three match win streak for Augusta and moved the team to 6-4 overall and 0-1 in the league. Francis Marion move to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the PBC.  

 

The PBC Player of Week, AU junior McKenzey Beck, booked 16 assists and 13 digs with a pair of aces, while junior Savanna Gonzales led the Jaguars in kills with 11. Freshman setter Brooklyn Holthaus had 12 assists and freshman libero Holland Martin served up four aces with 17 digs.

 

Georgia Garrison had a match-high 25 kills to lead FMU and Carrie McGinnis put up 44 assists.

 

In the first set the score was tied at 10-all and 20-all, with each team responding to every attack. The Patriots proved too much down the stretch and survived a 25-21 set. They followed it up with a 25-19 victory in set two.

 

Augusta came out firing in a must win third set and went on top 9-6 with Martin on serve. Later in the set, Martin kept a long rally going with a layout dig and Natalia Gouveia buried it for a kill that led to a FMU timeout.

 

On top 16-10 in the third set, Augusta forced a fourth set with a close 25-21 victory. The Pats hit .286 in the fourth set and won with the largest point margin of 25-18. FMU recorded a .225 hitting percentage to AU's .142 and they had 54 kills to the Jags' 45.

 

The Jaguars welcome the UNC Pembroke Braves on Saturday, Sept. 16 for a 2:00 p.m. PBC match in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
