Jaguar Volleyball Wraps Play At Queens Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Augusta University volleyball team ended the 2017 Queens Invitational by splitting the non-conference doubleheader with California University of Pennsylvania and Queens. Augusta downed Cal U 3-1 and fell to tourney-host Queens by the same score on Saturday afternoon.

 

 

Hosted by Queens University, the non-conference tournament featured Queens, Augusta, California University of Pennsylvania, Francis Marion, Shorter, Wingate, and Winston-Salem. AU split day-one action, beating Winston-Salem 3-2 and falling to Wingate 3-1 on Friday.

 

The Jaguars (2-2) beat Cal U 3-1 (25-23, 25-22, 26-28, 25-19) to start the second day, behind a .225 hitting percentage to the Vulcans' .154. Junior Savanna Gonzales led the team with 18 kills, on a .311 hitting percentage. Junior-transfer Natalia Gouveia put up 14 kills and 16 digs, and junior McKenzey Beck also had a double-double with 26 assists and 12 kills.

 

Sophomore preseason All-PBC selection Jessica Hedrick managed 11 kills and sophomore- setter Payton Murchie carded 31 assists for Augusta.

 

Tourney host Queens fought off the Jags in the final match of the event, winning 3-1 after the fourth set went to 37-35. Gonzales gave AU 17 kills and Gouveia and Beck each had 13. Holland Martin produced 24 digs and six assists for the Jags.

 

Augusta hosts Belmont-Abbey on Tuesday, Sept. 5 for the 2017 home opener in Christenberry Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m.
