Jags Beat Belmont Abbey, 3-1, In 2017 Home Opener

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University volleyball team opened home play in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Tuesday night against Belmont-Abbey and won a 3-1 non-conference match.

 

Augusta (3-2) recovered from a second-set defeat and stole back-to-back wins in the final sets for their third win of the year. There were 15 tie scores in the contest, but only four lead changes.

 

The Jags won set one 25-20 over the Crusaders, (2-2) but dropped the second 25-16. After the defeat, AU grabbed the first point of the third set and never looked back. The team posted a .231 hitting percentage to BAC's .190 and had seven aces to their three.

 

AU junior McKenzey Beck posted her first triple-double of the season with 17 kills, 17 assists, and 13 digs. Sophomore setter Payton Murchie provided 20 assists, seven digs and three aces, while junior Savanna Gonzales had seven kills and junior Blair Bolton six in the win.

 

Freshman Chloe Allen gave the Jaguars six digs, five kills, five digs, and two aces in a productive night.

 

Mackenzie Chrapliwy led BAC with 12 kills and Brianna Morgheim managed 11 in the loss.

 

Augusta heads across the Savannah River for the USC Aiken Tournament Sept. 8-9 in the Convocation Center. The Jags face Anderson at 3:00 p.m. and Valdosta State at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8 and meet Fayetteville State at 10:00 a.m. and Barton at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9.
