Augusta Drops Pair To Open Play In  SAC/Peach Belt Challenge

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn., – Hosted by both Carson-Newman University in Jefferson, City, Tenn., and Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn., the SAC/Peach Belt Challenge welcomed teams for a two-day event in non-conference action. Augusta University fell 3-1 to Lincoln Memorial and 3-2 to Carson-Newman in day one on Friday night on the campus of Carson-Newman.

 

After a weekend pause from competition due to Hurricane Matthew, Augusta (10-6) returned to the court at the regional crossover featuring teams from the South Atlantic Conference and the Peach Belt Conference.

 

The Jaguars met Lincoln Memorial (14-2) and host Carson-Newman for two non-conference matches. Augusta fell 3-1 to LMU and dropped a five-set battle 3-2 to the C-N Eagles.

 

LMU made a statement in set one with a 25-15 win. Augusta won 25-21 in set three, but the Railsplitters took an extended fourth set 29-27.

 

Senior Jordan Bickett had 12 kills and 12 digs with three aces and three assists for Augusta. Freshmen Jessica Hedrick posted five kills, three aces, three digs, and five blocks, sophomore Savanna Gonzales 11 kills and four blocks, and sophomore Blair Bolton nine kills and five blocks.

 

Freshman Sammie Baker had 21 assists and Payton Murchie 19. Lincoln-Memorial had a .254 attack percentage to Augusta's .150 and had two more kills overall. LMU's Kiera Holland and Samantha Cash each had 12 kills.

 

Facing host C-N in the second match of the day, the Jags fell four points in set five after two extended sets of play. Bickett booked 14 kills and Hedrick 15 in the loss. Baker assisted 40 shots and senior Catherine DeSilvester notched 14 digs.

 

Augusta travels across the state to take on Mars Hill and host Tusculum on Saturday in the second day of action.

 

On Tuesday, Oct. 18 the Augusta Jaguars host the annual PINK OUT match to raise awareness and support for the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University. Augusta hosts Lander for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
