Jags To Host Lander In PBC Tourney Nov. 11

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The 2014 GRU Augusta volleyball team is the winningest team in school history and they just ended the season with two non-conference wins over Belmont Abbey and Converse on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Jags concluded the regular season ranked third in the Peach Belt Conference and on Tuesday, Nov. 11, they will host number-six seed Lander at 7:00 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse for the first round of the PBC Tournament.

GRU Augusta just capped their regular season schedule on Saturday, Nov. 8. GRU met Belmont Abbey in the first of two non-conference matches and outhit Belmont Abbey .195-to-.123 and had 12 blocks to their two in the 3-2 win. GRU juniors Katie Beresford and Kailla Baptiste each totaled 13 kills to lead the GRU offense. Beresford is coming off her season-high performance with a .714 attack percentage on Nov. 5 against GC. She added three assisted blocks and three solo blocks on Saturday, while Baptiste provided eight digs. Senior Maggie Darling notched 12 kills, eight digs and two service aces. GRU took care of Converse 3-1 in their last match of the regular season, led again by Beresford (15 kills) and Baptiste (12 kills). Catherine Desilvester totaled 39 digs on the day and Alyssa Latham added 42 assists.

Now 26-7 overall on the season and 13-5 in league play, the Jaguars surpassed their old school mark of 23 wins set in the 1995 season.  The 2014 squad has also set a record for best winning percentage in school history.  GRU will host No.6 Lander on Tuesday night at Christenberry Fieldhouse.  Lander finished 9-9 in league play after beating Flagler on Saturday in the regular-season finale, but lost a tiebreaker to Columbus State. The Jags beat Lander at home and on the road this year with a score 3-2 each time. 

With the final conference matches of the regular season in the books, the Peach Belt Conference has released the 2014 Volleyball Tournament bracket from the league office in Augusta, Ga.   The event will be played under a new format this season with quarterfinal matches being played on Tuesday, Nov. 11, and hosted by the higher seed.  The highest remaining seed following quarterfinal play will host the final four next Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15.

USC Aiken is the second seed for the PBC Tournament.  The Pacers finished the regular season tied with Georgia Regents University at 13-5 in conference play.  The two teams split their regular-season meetings and each won with identical 3-1 set scores.  USCA gets the tiebreak thanks to their win over top-seeded Armstrong last Thursday. Armstrong swept GRU during the year. 

The PBC semifinals will be played on Friday, Nov. 14 at 5:00 pm and 7:30 pm with the championship match on Sunday, Nov. 15, at 2:00 pm.   All of Tuesday's quarterfinal matches will begin at 7:00 pm local time.
