Jags Shut Out UNC Pembroke On Road

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Jaguar volleyball team won their ninth 3-0 match of the 2014 season with a shut-out Peach Belt Conference win over the UNC Pembroke Braves on Halloween night, Friday Oct. 31 in the Jones Center.

GRU Augusta advances to 22-7 and 11-5 in the league, while the Braves slip to 14-19 and 2-13. The Jags took care of UNCP in the first set with their largest victory of the match at 25-19. Set two saw the Braves rally for the closest contest of the night as they took the opening point and held a slight advantage over the Jaguars.

GRU's Katie Beresford and Kristen Koch struck back-to-back kills to keep the Jags ahead at 19-16, but the Braves tied it at 19-all on a Caroline Pridgen kill. From there, the second set saw four tie scores until the Jags used Beresford and Koch again consecutive kills to hold the Braves.GRU has 21 kills to nine errors in set two and hit .235 as a team.

The Jags held off UNCP 25-21 in set three to win their 11 league match of the season – led by senior Maggie Darling's 12 kills and three assisted blocks. Junior Katie Beresford shined on the net and had 10 kills, five digs, and two assisted blocks. Libero Catherine Desilvester dug 19 shots and junior-setter Alyssa Latham assisted 37 points with 12 digs.

Last time out against the Braves, the Jags won a 3-1 match at home in Christenberry Fieldhouse on Oct. 4. Senior Kristen Koch finished the afternoon with 17 kills, junior Alyssa Latham added 46 assists and sophomore Catherine DeSilvester tallied 20 digs in the win.

The team plays their last conference game on the road tomorrow, Saturday Nov. 1 for a 2:00 p.m. match at Francis Marion in Florence, S.C.
