AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguar volleyball team started fast up 2-0, but were unable to hold on against the Columbus State Cougars (10-10,5-5 PBC) who took three games in a row to steal a 3-2 win (18-25,21-25,25-12,25-21,15-11) on Wednesday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
GRU was also celebrating their annual PINK OUT game to support cancer research. All proceeds and support went to the GRU Cancer Center. A special thanks to Dr. Samir Khlief for attending the game and showing his gratitude!
The Jaguars (17-7, 7-5 PBC) started fast opening up a 16-10 lead in set one with an attack percentage of .297. It was more of the same in set two as the Jaguars had another solid attack percentage of .225 as they got up early and were able to hold on 25-21. GRU was unable to close out the match in set three, posting a -.216 attack percentage with 13 errors, and losing 25-12.
Columbus State gradually got better as the match progressed and took set four 25-21 thanks to a .212 attack percentage. The Cougars carried all the momentum into set five and were able to finish the Jaguars off - winning 15-11.
Senior's Kristen Koch and Maggie Darling led the way for the Jaguars as they each posted 12 kills, Koch also had two service aces while Darling added one. Freshman Kali Boatwright had 10 kills of her own and freshman Paige Elliott posted a team high 1.5 blocks, while Sadie Thurston led the team with 28 assists.
Katie Poole shined for the Cougars, she posted 16 kills, three service aces, seven digs and 1.5 blocks. Megan Frame also helped in the rally as she posted eight kills and three blocks. Erika Gelzinyle had seven kills and half a block of her own. The Cougars had 10 blocks to the Jaguars four.
Last time out the Jaguar volleyball team took care of the Columbus State Cougars 3-1 in their first Peach Belt Conference road test of the 2014 season on Sept. 24.
