GRU Sweeps Final Day Of Queens Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After splitting the opening day of the Queens invitational with a win over Limestone and a loss to Lenoir-Rhyne, GRU Augusta improved to 3-1 on the young season with two non-conference victories over the Catawba Indians and the Queens Royals in the final day of play in the Levine Center.

The Jags only scored 13 points in their first set against Catawba to trail 1-0 in a 25-13 loss. Responding with a .519 hitting percentage in set two, the Jaguars won 25-14, before taking the next two 25-20 and 25-18.

Senior Kristen Koch (14 kills) and freshman Kali Boatwright (13) anchored the offense for the Jags and freshman Sadie Thurston (36 assists) and Cat Desilvester (18 digs) highlighted the defense.

In their last match of the tourney and facing the host team, the Jaguars won a long first set 28-26 - outlasting the Royals when things were tied at 25-all. GRU brought their most potent offense for the final match of the tourney, posting a .290 hitting percentage.

Senior Maggie Darling had six kills and five digs, Koch added 12 kills and Boatwright dug 22 attacks while Thurston assisted 22 shots.

The Jaguars debut at home in Christenberry Fieldhouse from Sept. 12-13 at the GRU Augusta Invitational, a five-team tournament where the Jags will host Emmanuel (7:30 p.m.) on Friday, Sept. 12, and Carson-Newman (2:00 p.m.) and Paine (6:00 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 13. The Jaguars will also host Paine vs. UNC Pembroke (5:00 p.m.) on Sept. 12, and Emmanuel vs. Paine (10:00 a.m.), Carson-Newman vs. UNC Pembroke (12:00 p.m.) and Emmanuel vs. UNC Pembroke (4:00 p.m.) on Sept. 13.
