AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta lost a Peach Belt Conference match 3-0 to the UNC Pembroke Braves on Friday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
McKenna Heath had the first serve of the night for the Jaguars (7-23, 1-15 PBC) and Katie Beresford's kill to the back line put GRU up early. After rallying points, UNCP (15-17, 4-11 PBC) fought to have a three-point lead off a Jaguar attack error.
Cruising to match point, the Braves allowed six points to the Jags, but held on for a 25-19 win. The Jags hit .103 to UNCP's .108 – the closest hitting percentage of all sets played.
Both teams matched points until the five-all mark when the Braves scored three in a row and never
fell behind to take another 25-19 victory. In the third set, GRU tied it at 12-all after the Braves took the lead to open the set. The Jags broke free for their first advantage of the third set with an 18-16 scored. The Jags had UNCP down 23-20, but a late rally gave the Braves a 3-0 shut-out victory.
The Braves held the Jags to a .096 hitting percentage, while hitting .170 as a team. Sabrina Gomez (UNCP) and Kristen Koch (GRU) each had 14 kills for match highs. Heath had 28 assists to lead the Jags and Shekinah-Joy Toloumu had a match-high 34. Maggie Darling's 13 digs for GRU was a team-high performance and Danielle Brown led the team and the night with 21 digs.
