Jags Split Day Two Of Bash At The Beach

AUGUSTA, Ga. – GRU Augusta improved to 2-1 in the second day of the Pepsi Bash at the Beach, handling Claflin 3-0, before falling to tournament host Palm Beach Atlantic 3-0 in the Rubin Center Saturday afternoon.

The Jags (5-15) moved to 2-0 in the tourney with a 3-0 shutout win over Claflin in the early game on Saturday. GRU Augusta held Claflin to a .009 hitting percentage while recording a .207. Junior Kristen Koch had a match-high 13 kills, Paige Tuttle posted eight and Chandler Mass gave 34 assists.

Each team had 4.0 blocks in the meeting, while Catherine DeSilvester had 18 digs for the Jags and Maggie Darling 10. Chelcey Foster paced Claflin with eight kills and Caleen Hawkkins had 18 assists.

In the Jags' second match of the day and the third of the tourney, GRU hung around point-for-point against PBA in set three after dropping the first two. Tied 12-all, a bad set and four attack errors from GRU gave PBA the edge. The Jags recorded their best play in the third set, combining for 11 kills for a .148 hitting percentage.

The Sailfish out-killed the Jags 38-to-22 and posted a .220 hitting percentage to GRU's .022. Koch's 10 kills and Mass' 17 assists paced the Jaguar offense, while DeSilvester posted nine digs and Koch and Darling each eight. Faith Rohn willed the Fish with 10 kills and Becca Acevedo gave 32 assists.

GRU Augusta hosts Georgia College on Tuesday, Oct. 15 for Dig Pink Night to support breast cancer awareness. The match will be held at the Wellness Center on the Health Sciences Campus off 15th Street and Laney Walker. The first 50 GRU students to show a student ID will receive free pizza.
