Jags Win Early In Tourney

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Jaguars (4-14) jumped on top of the Stonehill Skyhawks early in GRU Augusta's first match at the Pepsi Bash at the Beach Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Palm Beach Atlantic, to win the match 3-1 in Rubin Arena Friday night.

GRU Augusta held Stonehill (11-6) to a .032 hitting percentage, while posting a .176. Kristen Koch's 17 kills guided the offense to a 2-0 lead before the Skyhawks forced a set four with a 25-22 win in a set three that saw a four-point lead as the largest advantage for both teams.

A 14-5 advantage in set four for GRU didn't let up. Eventually up 21-12, four Stonehill attack errors gave the Jags a 3-1 lead. Koch's 17 kills were good for the match high and Catherine DeSilvester's 18 digs led the team. Koch added 15 digs, Michaela Honigl posted 12 and Chandler Mass gave 36 assists.

Kelsey Weymouth led the Skyhawks with 11 kills, while 35 assists from Taylor Stevens willed the defense. Each team recorded 10.0 blocks on the match. Tomorrow in day two of the Bash at the beach, the Jags take on Claflin at 10:00 a.m. and Palm Beach Atlantic, the tourney hosts, at 2:00 p.m.
