Jaguars Finish Seventh At PBC Championships

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Augusta University women's outdoor track and field team finished seventh at the 2019 Peach Belt Conference Championships on Saturday afternoon with numerous All-Conference performances on the campus of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

 

 

Augusta opened the event on Thursday, endured a weather delay on Friday, and ended the championships on Saturday. The top-three finishers in each event earned All-PBC honors. Senior Kiana Smith and junior McKenzie Knudsen were named All-Conference on Thursday for their performances in the heptathlon and the 10,000-meter run.

 

The Jaguars continued their strong distance performances on Saturday when sophomore Micah Weathers won the 5,000-meter race in 17:38.68, while Knudsen took third in 18:30.49. Both picked up All-PBC status with the top marks. Augusta got another All-PBC finish from senior Macy Hayes, who tied for third in the high jump with a leap of 1.55m. Weathers earned All-PBC honors in the 1,500-meter run as well and took second overall in 4:55.14.

 

On Friday, sophomore Alyisha Anderson nearly earned an All-Conference mark with a fourth-place showing in the triple jump. Anderson joined Edrei Yates, Jayla Ferris, and Morgan Mitchell to take fourth in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 49.06.

 

Splashing her way to eighth place, junior Rachel Hammesfahr raced the 3000-meter steeplechase in 12:29.66 and sophomore Miranda Taylor placed 13th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.41. Hammesfahr also took home the PBC's Elite-1 Award for having the highest GPA of all competitors at the event.

 

AU had a pack of Jaguars finish closely together in the 200-meter run. Yates took 12th (27.43), Mitchell 13th (27.57), Ferris 14th (27.83), and Skylar Ackerman 16th (29.45). Yates also grabbed seventh in the 100 meter with a time of 12.33.

 

In the throws events, Augusta freshman Chanice Campbell took 16th (29.37m) and senior Ashley Leonard 18th in the discus throw on Friday. Leonard also took eighth in the shot put with a toss of 11.17m. Smith carded 12th in 10.26m, freshman Katilyn Lancaster 15th in 9.75m, and Campbell took 19th in 8.71m. The hammer throw featured three Jaguars and senior Mallory Howard led the team in ninth place (38.03m), while junior JanNae Marzell took 10th (35.82m), and Leonard 13th (30.99m).
