PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Augusta University women's outdoor track and field team finished the Peach Belt Conference Championships on Saturday and took fifth place out of eight teams at the Dick & Lenore Taylor Track.
Embry-Riddle won the championship with 219 points. In second came Nova Southeastern with 162, and UNC Pembroke rounded out the top-three with 149 points.
Augusta had four student-athletes across the three day event who earned All-Conference honors for finishing top three in their respective events. Sophomore Rachel Hammesfahr was awarded the Elite-15 Award for having the highest GPA out of all the student athletes at the championship. Also, Kiana Kelly was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
In the field, sophomore Ashley Leonard took eighth in the shot put with 11.2 meters. In the high jump, junior Macy Hayes leapt 1.61 meters to take fourth, and junior Kiana Kelly closed out the top-10 with a distance of 1.46 meters.
Senior Lara Way snagged third in the 5000 meters with a time of 18:03.55. She was trailed by freshman Micah Weathers in fourth with 18:19.80. Weathers also finished fifth in the 1500 meters with 4:53.26. Behind her came seniors Amber Palermo in seventh and Diana Petrmichlova in eighth, with times of 5:05.15 and 5:05.42, respectively. To conclude the championship, sophomore Edrei Yates took sixth in the 100 meters with s time of 12.58.
Augusta heads to the Seminole Twilight on Friday, May 4, hosted by Florida State, in Tallahassee, Fla.
