Women’s Track Fourth At Trojan Challenge

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Augusta University women's outdoor track and field team finished the Mount Olive Trojan Challenge in fourth place out of eight competing teams in Mount Olive, N.C. It was the third meet of the year for the Jaguars.

 
 

Hosted by the University of Mount Olive, the Trojan Challenge featured six teams and Slippery Rock ran away with the title with 241 points. Mount Olive took second (205 points), UNC Pembroke third (88), Augusta fourth (80), Clarion fifth (68), Barton sixth (35), Meredith seventh (7), and Coker eighth (5).

 

The Lady Jags shined in the 4x400 meter relay, when Sarah Hossack, Kate Boland, Morgan Mitchell, and Heather Hammett teamed to win in 4:05.86.

 

Hammett took home second in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:03.28 and held on for seventh place in the 100m hurdles (15.70), while Kiana Kelly took ninth (16.33) out of 16 competitors. Freshman Mallory Howard managed 11th in the javelin with a reach of 27.85m, while Kelly placed 13th in 25.88m.

 

Sophomores Macy Hayes and Kiana Kelly were five meters away from winning the high jump. Hayes and Kelly tied for second in 1.55 meters, while Slippery Rock's Sabrina Anderson won in 1.60m. For the long jump, AU's Edrei Yates took fifth of 14 with a distance of 4.90 meters.

 

Yates took third in the 100 meter race in 12.54 and Morgan Mitchell and Sarah Hossack placed eighth and ninth in the 400 meter. Susan Obi rounded out the 400 meter in 14th.

 

Rookie thrower Shelby Myers set the school record for the shot up to open the season at Columbus State and she carded fifth of 25 at Mount Olive with a toss of 11.47m. Teammate Ashley Leonard snuck inside the top 10 with a toss of 10.56m.

 

For the 5000 meter race, Lara Way took third in 19:07.63 and McKenzie Knudsen sixth in 19:46.81. Boland earned fourth in the 1500 meter race with a time of 5:04.75 and Pricilla Cartwright sixth in 5:06.42.

 

Augusta heads to Atlanta, Ga., for the Emory Classic March 24-25.
