Augusta Finishes 13th In 34-Team Meet At Emory Invitational

Augusta competes in third meet of season in two-day event in Atlanta, Ga. 

ATLANTA, Ga., - The Augusta Jaguars traveled to Atlanta, Ga., for the 2016 Emory Invitational and finished 13th out of 34 teams on Friday-Saturday, March 18-19.

The Jags took seventh at Columbus State and fifth at UNC Pembroke in their first two meets of the season and carded 13th at the Emory Invitational in their biggest meet this far. With 45 teams competing, the 2016 Emory Invitational was the largest ever in the meets history.

Competing at the Emory Invitational along with the Emory was Agnes Scott, Albany State, Albion, Augusta University, Berea, Berry, Birmingham-Southern, Bob Jones, Brenau, Brewton-Parker, Campbellsville, Capital, Clark Atlanta, Clayton State, Columbus St., Covenant, Emmanuel (Ga.), Fisk, GC&SU, Hope, Jacksonville St., Kennesaw State, Kentucky State, Kentucky Wesleyan, Lee (Tenn.), Life, Lincoln Memorial, Methodist, Miles, Mobile, Montevallo, Oglethorpe, Paine, Piedmont, Reinhardt, Rowan, SCAD Atlanta, Shorter, Spring Hill, Tennessee Wesleyan, Tuskegee, Voorhees, West Georgia, and Wittenberg.

The event began on Friday and the Jags were off to a strong start. Sophomore Heather Hammett grabbed second place in the 400 meter hurdles for the Jags in 1:02.61 in the field of 37. In the 4x800 meter relay, Augusta notched fifth of 14 with Amber Palermo, Jasmine Payne, Diana Petrmichlova, and Taylor Shaw finishing in 10:10.43

Kiana Kelly's score of 5.27m in the long jump was good for 12th in the field of 62 and Macy Hayes also got 12th in the high jump at 1.50m. In the 10000 meter race, Jordan Humphrey earned Augusta a sixth-place mark of 28 runners in 40:03.22 and Morgan Ryfee finished in12:44.29 to card 10th of 26 in the 3000m steeplechase.

In the un-seeded 1500 meter run, Augusta's Diana Petrmicholva took first in 5:15.40 out of 46 and in the sub-seeded 1500 meter run Taylor Shaw notched 19th of 32 for the Jaguars.

Hammett finished the 400 meter dash in 59.67 to take 12th, Dejah Johnson placed sixth in the 100 meter dash in 12.24, and Palermo carded 26th in 2:29.18 in the 800 meter run.

The Jaguars compete at the Falcon Classic in Montevallo, Ala., March 25-26.
