Women’s Track & Field Snags Seventh At Columbus State Invitational To Begin 2016 Season

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Augusta University women's outdoor track and field team began the 2016 season at the Columbus State Cougar Invitational and placed seventh overall with two new school records.

Freshman Macy Hayes set a new school record for the high jump on a leap at 1.50 meters and junior Olivia Rodriguez carded the new 3000 meter school record with a time of 10:52.46.

The best performance for the women's team on the day came in the 3000 meter dash, with the Jags placing first and second in the event. Rodriguez finished first and Jordan Humphrey took second with a time of 11:00.48. 

For throws, Kiana Kelly placed fifth in the javelin throw with a distance of 28.86 meters in her first competition as a Jaguar and she carded 15th in the triple jump at 9.50 meters. Kindall Weems recorded a distance of 8.40 meters in the shot put and placed 23rd.

Augusta performed well in the 1500 meter run with a sixth place finish by Morgan Ryffe in 5:12.85 and a seventh place showing from Amber Palermo in 5:13.77. Palermo also notched points for the Jaguars in the 800 meter run, placing eighth with a time of 2:31.53.

Aaliyah Pettway took 15th in the 400 meter dash for Augusta and Heather Hammett placed 22nd out of 45 in the women's 200 meter.

The Augusta women's and men's track and field teams compete at the UNCP Braves Classic in Pembroke, N.C., on Friday, March 4 at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
