GRU Third Out Of Six At Cougar Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga.  – The GRU Augusta women's outdoor track and field team finished in third place out of six teams in their last scheduled team meet of the year on Saturday at the Cougar Classic in Columbus, Ga.

Hosted by Columbus State, the Cougar Classic featured six teams competing. West Georgia won the overall event, while CSU took second at home. GRU took third over Tuskegee, North Georgia, and Clayton State in fourth, fifth, and sixth.

The Jags performed well across the board and were highlighted by numerous top finishes.

Heather Hammett hurdled her way to two more first-place finishes on Saturday for the Jags, winning the 100m hurdles in 15.71 and owning the 400m hurdles in 1:04.88 to take first. Ashley Love placed fourth for GRU in 16.71m in the 100m hurdles and Morgan Ryffe notched fourth in the 400m hurdles.

The GRU 4x400m relay team, made up of Hammett, Aaliyah Pettway, Sabiyah Broderick, and Ashley Love, finished second out of five teams with a time of 4:06.64.

GRU's Sabiyah Broderick won the javelin throw event with a throw distancing 30.00m, as Lucyhelena Somarriba took fourth. JaVoni Canty notched second in the shot put with a throw going 11.29m and Broderick took fifth.

Dejah Johnson was just steps off from first place in the 100m dash, and took second in 12.61. Johnson did the same in the 200m dash, taking second in 25.74. Pettway had a fourth-place finish in 1:00.36 out of 01 sprinters and Olivia Rodriguez third out of 24 in the 1500m race.

In the other long distance event, Morgan Ryffe carded second in 18:49.50 and Jordan Humphrey took third in 18:51.14.
