GRU Sixth Of 25 At Emory Classic

ATLANTA, Ga.  – The GRU Augusta women's outdoor track & field team earned sixth place at the Emory Classic in the field of 25 on March 27-28 in Atlanta, Ga.

The Jags took 11th last week at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., and improved by six places in the second weekend on the same track. Battling the cold and windy conditions, the Jags notched a top-10 finish, while Taylor took first, Emory second, Columbus State, third, Nazareth fourth, and Marian (Ind.) rounded out the top five above the Jags.

Morgan Ryffe blazed the distace event and took first overall in the 1500m run with a time of 4:54.36 to best 44 other racers. In the 5000m run, the other distance runners shined for the Jags with Jordan Humphrey taking fifth and Olivia Rodriguez seventh out of 54 runners.

To start the event on Friday, GRU's Sabiyah Broderick placed third in the javelin throw with a distance of 32.81m and Lucyhelena Somarriba finished 14th in 21.19m. Making up the GRU 4x100 team, Adanna Thompson, Aaliyah Pettway, Dejah Johnson, and Angelica Clayton, placed third in 49.01 for the relays.

In the other 4x400 team for the Jags, Hammett, Thompson, Johnson, and Ashley Love teamed together to take fifth out of 12 teams.

Teammates Dejah Johnson (fifth) and Adanna Thompson (ninth) earned top-10 places for the Jags in the long jump on Friday. Heather Hammett hurdled her way to seventh place in the 100m hurdles, while Broderick took 12th and Johnson 13th.

Dejah Johnson stayed strong in the 100m dash and placed second overall in 12.42, just behind CSU's Shanila Chapman who took first in 12.14. JaVoni Canty bested 20 other competitors and took fourth overall in the shot put with her final toss registering 11.28m.

Canty carded 11th in the discus throw, and Thompson placed eighth in the triple jump to wrap up the field events on Saturday.
