Women’s Tennis Reveals 2016-17 Signing Class Featuring Five Freshmen

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's tennis team signed five new student-athletes for the 2016-17 season. The five new faces will join senior Monica Gonzalez and junior Amelia Pinoargote for the upcoming spring season that begins in February 2017.

Head Coach Michael Mcgrath, entering his 19th season at the helm of the program, signed five incoming freshmen all from outside of the United States.

New to the squad is Marie Cantenot (Roquebrune-sur-Argens, France), Merye Gobernate (São Paulo, Brazil), Alejandra Gonzalez Arranz (Burgos, Spain), Eva Miralles-Miro (Barcelona, Spain), and Giovana Randi (Indaiatuba, Brazil).

Senior Monica Gonzalez (Barcelona, Spain) is the lone senior on the team and joins junior Amelia Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) as the only two upperclassmen on the squad.

Gonzalez received the PBC Elite 15 Award in 2016. The Elite 15 Award recognizes the student-athlete competing at each PBC championship with the highest overall cumulative GPA. Gonzalez also made the 2016 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic team and went 11-10 in singles play, starting all 21 matches at No. 2 singles.

Pinoargote competed at No. 6 singles for the Jags and went 9-7 overall in 2016. She was 9-6 at No. 2 doubles last season and helped Augusta to a No. 36 national ranking and a sixth-place spot in the NCAA Southeast Region rankings.
