ASU Wraps Up PBC Championships

In the third match on Friday's tournament-opening play, the No. 6 seeded ASU women fell 5-0 to No. 3 Francis Marion in the women's quarterfinals. FMU took both the completed singles matches with Julia Graf defeating ASU's Roberta Oliviera 6-1, 6-0 and Nora Westbye defeated Liss Murakami 6-1, 6-0.

In the women's-doubles quarterfinals, FMU handled the Jaguars starting with Mona Blauen and Julia Graf beating Victoria Lindqvist and Liv Pettersson 8-2. Westbye and Tereza Baranova defeated Oliveira and Julie Fontaine 8-3 and Kimberley Hurter and Lena Specht took care of Maria C. Pimentel and Murakami.

The Jaguar men's team dropped their quarterfinal match with Georgia College 5-2. GC's Johan Wadstein defeated Victor Cabellos 6-2, 6-3 in the first game of the sixth match of the day. ASU junior Romain Brunie beat Alex Schubert 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 for the Jags' only singles victory. The Bobcats duo of Wadstein and Taylor Powell knocked off the No. 22 nationally-ranked pair of Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes 8-6. With two more victories GC won Friday's battle 5-2.

In the women's elimination bracket, ASU beat USC Aiken 5-4, despite the Pacers winning the first two singles matches and doubles matches. ASU's Oliviera, Pimentel, Fontaine, and Murakami strung together four singles wins to take the elimination round. The Lady Jaguars went on to beat Clayton State 5-4 in the women's fifth-place match. Oliviera, Pimentel, Fontaine, and Murakami again, won four consecutive singles matches to compensate for ASU's two doubles losses.

The Jaguar men did a clean sweep of Flagler in the men's elimination round, beating the Saints 5-0 -led by No. 1 singles player Cabellos and the No. 1 doubles team of Cabellos and Guimaraes. ASU was unable to triumph in the next round (men's fifth-place bracket) over tourney hosts Francis Marion. The Patriots won the first three singles matches, before Romain Brunie took the first ASU match 6-2, 6-2. Three consecutive doubles match victories for FMU knocked off the Jags 5-1 in their final round.

The Armstrong Atlantic men's and women's teams each beat Columbus State for the championship titles. The women shutout the Cougars 5-0 and the men won 5-1.
