Incoming Freshman Maria Villanueva Wins Individual Women’s Spanish Championship

MADRID, Spain – Augusta University 2019-20 women's golf freshman, Maria Villanueva, won the Individual Women's Spanish Championship on Wednesday, May 29 at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid in Madrid, Spain. Villanueva was the only player to finish under par in the field of 117 competitors and won the tournament by nine strokes at 8-under-par.

 

 

A 5-6 standout from San Sebastián Spain, Villanueva shot 68 (-4), 71 (-1), 69 (-3), and 72 (E) to finish with a 280 after four rounds. She posted 15 birdies in the first three rounds and had two bogeys and an eagle in the final round on Wednesday to seal the title. Her bogey-free third round was her third-straight, under-par performance of the week.

 

Villanueva attended the Leonés School in Castile and León, Spain for two years. She has competed for the Spanish National Team since 2014 and was chosen for the Spanish Elite School of Golf in 2017-18. Villanueva will join the Augusta Jaguars as a freshman in 2019-20 and plans to pursue degree in business management.
