Jaguars Beat Florida & Arkansas, Advance To Match Play Finals At Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic

ATHENS, Ga. – The Augusta University women's golf team beat No. 7 Florida in the match play quarterfinals and rolled past No. 5 Arkansas in the semifinal round on Friday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Augusta is atop the leaderboard and faces No. 12 South Carolina in the match play finals beginning at 9:30 a.m. EST at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

 

 

No. 54 nationally-ranked Augusta was tied for first place with Kennesaw State after round one of stroke play on Thursday and remains at the top of the leaderboard with back-to-back match play wins over SEC teams.

 

The Jaguars squared off against No. 7 Florida to start match play at 8:00 a.m. off hole one Friday morning and won 4-1 over the Gators. Augusta senior Maggie Ashmore and freshman Teresa Diez-Moliner were each up by as many as three holes to win the first two pairings. Ashmore defeated Addie Baggarly 3-and-2, while T. Diez-Moliner won 4-and-2 over Jenny Kim. After UGA claimed the third, Jaguar junior Linda Lundqvist, who shot 69 (-3) and was tied for third individually after stroke play, was up three through 18 and won 3-and-2, before senior Cecilia Diez-Moliner gained momentum on the back nine and won 2-up through 15.

 

Augusta advanced to the semifinals to take on No. 5 Arkansas on Friday afternoon and won 4-1-0 with ease. Ashmore went 1-up against Car Gorlei in the first pairing, before the Jags won three of the next four matches.

 

The Tournament is being hosted by the University of Georgia on the par-72, 6,279-yard UGA Golf Course and features eight teams ranked in the top 50 and four in the top 25. The event ends on Saturday, April 13 with a final round of match play in Athens, Ga.
