Augusta Tied For First Through Stroke Play At UGA

ATHENS, Ga. – The Augusta University women's golf team is tied for first with No. 37 Kennesaw State at 2-over-par after the first round of stroke play on Thursday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. The event started with 18 holes of stroke play and continues Friday and Saturday with match play at the University of Georgia Golf Course. Augusta faces No. 7 Florida beginning at 8:00 a.m. off hole No. 1.

 

 

Hosted by the University of Georgia on the par-72, 6,279-yard course, the Liz Murphey features eight teams ranked in the top 50 and four in the top 25. Ranked No. 54 in the nation according to Golstat.com and 57th by Golf Week, the Jaguars joined No. 21 Alabama, No. 5 Arkansas, Daytona State, Denver, No. 7 Florida, No. 39 Georgia, No. 37 Kennesaw State, No. 40 Louisville, No. 36 Ole Miss, and No. 12 South Carolina.

 

The Jaguars teed off with the Florida Gators to start Thursday's stroke play and turned in 14 birdies as a team to stay at the top of the leaderboard. Augusta junior Linda Lundqvist is in third place overall out of 60 competitors, after shooting a 69 (-3) with two birdies on the front and three on the back nine. Freshman Teresa Diez-Moliner had one birdie at the turn, but eagled the par five 18th hole and finished with a 73 (+1) to tie for seventh.

 

Augusta senior Maggie Ashmore and junior Charlotte Alran each shot 74 (+2) and posted three birdies to share a tie for 15th, while senior Cecilia Diez-Moliner turned in a 76 (+4) to sit T33. The Tournament continues with match play on Friday and Saturday, April 13-14 in Athens, Ga.
