AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University women's golf team remained towards the top of the leaderboard at the 3M Augusta Invitational and finished tied for second with No. 21 Purdue out of 15 teams at Forest Hills Golf Club. The Jaguars shot their lowest score of the round with a 287 (-1) on Sunday to end their home event 9-over-par.
Augusta was in third place after 36 holes and battled Purdue down to the wire to share second place. It is AU's lowest finish of the 2017-18 season.
"We got better every day as a team, which is always our goal and that's how you compete to win," Augusta head coach Caroline Hegg said. "We were playing with two really good teams today and we beat them both head-to-head for the total day score. We did our part. Unfortunately Georgia was a little too far ahead of us, but we had a great tournament to have an under-par round to close it out."
Georgia lost its safe lead from round two and just held off the Jags and Boilermakers for the victory at even par – UGA's first ever at the 3MAI. Central Arkansas signed for fourth (+15), and Memphis managed fifth for the top teams.
Georgia's Jillian Hollis was the low scoring individual and won the tournament at 8-under-par (208).
Augusta was led by sophomore Linda Lundqvist for all 54 holes as she paced the Jags in a tie for third overall – capping off her weekend with a 3-under 69. Junior Maggie Ashmore finished strong with AU's low round of the event, a 68 (-4), to take a tie for 12th. Junior Cecilia Diez-Moliner tied for 15th (+4), sophomore Charlotte Alran tied for 22nd (+7), and freshman Teresa Diez-Moliner tied for 62nd (+18).
AU's Nicole Page and Sarah Tychsen competed as individuals and Tychsen tied for 34th (+10) and Page 44th (+13).
Next up, the Jaguars play at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate, hosted by Kennesaw State, March 26-27, at Pine Tree Country Club Kennesaw, Ga.
