Augusta Starts Season In Ninth At Jim West Challenge

WOODLANDS, Texas. – The Augusta University women's golf team began the 2017-18 season Sept. 11-12 at the Jim West Challenge, hosted by Texas State, at the Club at Carlton Woods on the Fazio Course. The Augusta Jaguars climbed the leaderboard three spots after day one to finish in ninth place at 23-over par.

The 2017 Jim West Challenge featured four teams who were ranked in the top 25 at the conclusion of last season with Duke leading at No. 10. Others in the top 25 were Kent State (14th), Oklahoma (25th) and Texas A&M (24th). The field also featured top 100 squads from last year in Augusta (42nd), Missouri (55th), Notre Dame (66th), Southern Miss (76th), TCU (40th), UTSA (71st) and Texas Tech (35th).

 

Teams played a 36-hole shotgun start on the par-71, 6,010-yard course to begin the event on Monday and ended with another shotgun start on Tuesday. Duke dominated the event and won at 33-under par, while Oklahoma owned second (-11), Texas Tech third (-10), Kent State fourth (-8), and Texas A&M fifth (-1) in the 13-team field.

 

Duke's Leona Maguire won the individual title 13-under par.

 

Augusta sent senior Maggie Ashmore, junior Cecilia Diez-Moliner, sophomores Charlotte Alran and Linda Lundqvist, and freshman Teresa Diez-Moliner. AU shot 300 (+16) in round one and put up their best score in the second round with a 297 (+13). A final round 288 (+14) led the Jaguars to ninth in the 13-team field.

 

C. Diez-Moliner shot the low score of her collegiate career with a 68 (-3) in round three to end the tourney 3-under par. She totaled five birdies in her final round and led Augusta in a tie for 12th overall.

 

Augusta senior Maggie Ashmore followed up a round-one 75 with a pair of 71s (E) to finish tied for 28th at 4-over par. Ashmore had eight birdies for the tournamrnt and four in her final 18 holes to finish second for the Jags.  

 

Sophomore Charlotte Alran followed up back-to-back 75s with a 2-over 73 in round three to earn a tie for 47th (+10) overall for the Jags, while freshman Teresa Diez-Moliner made her collegiate debut and finished 57th - highlighted by a second-round 72 (+1). Sophomore Linda Lundqvist placed in a tie for 58th at 16-over par.
