ATHENS, Ga. – The Augusta University women's golf team shot a 14-over 302 on Monday to for ninth with North Carolina in day one of the NCAA Athens Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
Hosted by the Georgia Bulldogs, the NCAA Athens Regional of the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships began with tee times on Monday morning at the par-72, 6,334-yard course. Two more days remain and the low six teams and the low three individuals not on those teams advance to the national championships, May 19-24.
Ranked No. 43 in the nation, the Jaguars are making their seventh NCAA regional appearance in the 16-year history of the program. The team sent senior trio Jessica Haigwood, Josefine Nyqvist, Eunice Yi, and freshmen Charlotte Alran and Linda Lundqvist to Athens.
Michigan State leads the 18-team field 4-under par, while No. 3 Alabama is second (+1), No. 8 Georgia and No. 11 Northwestern are 5-over par in a tie for third, No. 19 Baylor is fifth (+8), and No. 31 Tennessee holds down the top six 9-over par.
Augusta is tied with No. 35 North Carolina in ninth place – five shots out of the top six. In her first regional appearance, Alran posted three birdies to lead the Jags and earn a tie for 24th with a round-one 74 (+2).
Haigwood is in a tie for 30th after shooting a 3-over 75, Nyqvist is tied for 38th with a 76 (+4), Lundqvist is in 54th (+5), and Yi 67th (+7).
