Jags Five Strokes Off The Lead To Open Clemson Invitational

SUNSET, S.C. – The Augusta Jaguars shot one-over par to open the first ever Clemson Invitational women's golf tournament on Friday afternoon and are tied for sixth with Oklahoma and Vanderbilt at the Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C. 

Clemson is hosting its first women's golf tournament in history with a 14-team field for the 54-hole three day event on the par 72 Jack Nicklaus designed course that is 30 miles north of Clemson.

The field includes top 25 teams from Florida (8), Tennessee (19) and Texas A&M (22), and top 50 teams from (32) Augusta, Furman, Houston, Michigan State and the host school Clemson.  Rounding out the field is Boston College, Kennesaw State, Oklahoma, UNC-Wilmington, Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech.

No. 8 Florida leads the event at four-under par, while Houston is second (-3), Michigan State third (-1), and Furman and Clemson share fifth for the top five teams after round one.

Juniors Teresa Caballer-Hernani and Jessica Haigwood each shot 71 (-1) in round one to lead Augusta and share a tie for 10th place overall. The Jags starting five combined for 289 (+1) on the wet and windy course.

Coming off a win at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate, junior Josefine Nyqvist posted back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to finish with a 73 (+1) and a tie for 28th. Next for the Jags was freshman Sonya Knebel who earned the start and fired a two-over 74 to sit tied for 36th.

Junior Eunice Yi is tied for 60th with her round one 76 (+4). Round two begins on Saturday, April 1 with another round of 18 holes beginning at 8:30 a.m.
