GRU Augusta cards 303 (+15) at the NCAA East Regional, Eunice Yi & Josefine Nyqvist two-over
RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 47 GRU Augusta women's golf team is 15 shots off the lead in their fifth regional all time - shooting a 15-over 303 in the first round at the NCAA East Regional in Raleigh, N.C., at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course on Thursday.
The 54-hole, 18-team event started on Thursday and the Jaguars began on the back nine on the 6,381-yard, par-72 course. Eunice Yi, Teresa Caballer Hernani, Jessica Haigwood, Josefine Nyqvist, and freshman Sonya Knebel made up the starting five for GRU Augusta in Head Coach Kory Henkes' fourth regional appearance in her four years at the school.
The Jags are fifteen strokes behind the leader, No. 7 LSU, who shot even-par 288. No. 42 NC State is second (+2), No. 40 Ohio State third (+4), Campbell fourth (+5), and No. 31 Alabama fifth (+6).
Sophomores Eunice Yi and Josefine Nyqvist paced the Jags and shot two-over 74's in round one and are each tied for 21st in the 96-player field. After picking up a few strokes in her first few holes, Teresa Caballer Hernani notched a birdie to start her front nine and ended with 77 (+5) to sit in a tie for 55th.
Jessica Haigwood carded six-plus 78 in her first 18 holes and is tied for 67th, while freshman Sonya Knebel shot a seven-over 79 and tied for 80th. Haigwood had one birdie and Knebel two in round one.
Round two begins tomorrow with another 18 holes of regional play. Live scoring continues at Golfstat.com.
The regional field is made up of 29 automatic qualifiers – earned by winning a conference championship – and 43 at-large bids, which are determined using Golfstat's team rankings. The top 6 teams after 54 holes at each regional will advance to the May 22-27 NCAA Championship at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
